Those Lake “Weeds” Actually Keep Lakes Healthy

October 22, 2026

Not all aquatic plants are bad for our lakes! In fact, native aquatic plants play an important role in maintaining healthy lake ecosystems, providing habitat for fish and wildlife.

NH Public Radio recently featured a short story about the importance of protecting these beneficial plants rather than removing them unnecessarily.

It’s a timely reminder of why SLAM’s Weed Watching program is so important. Our volunteers learn to recognize the native plants growing in Silver Lake while keeping an eye out for invasive aquatic species that could threaten the lake’s ecosystem.
